BEYOND THE ENVIRONMENTAL: POPULAR EDUCATION AND BIOLOGY TEACHING IN SHAPING FUTURES AMID THE CLIMATE CRISIS ENSINO DE BIOLOGIA E EDUCAÇÃO POPULAR NA CONSTRUÇÃO DE FUTUROS DIANTE DA CRISE CLIMÁTICA

Abstract

The global climate crisis has increasingly been addressed in classrooms, especially in biology education, since the environmental consequences of this process are often included in ecological themes. However, approaching the climate crisis strictly from an environmental perspective limits the depth of the discussions and the potential for transformation among those involved in the educational process. In this report, we explore the possibilities of addressing this issue through the lens of popular education, in an interdisciplinary way, understanding it as one of the consequences of what Malcom Ferdinand calls the “colonial inhabiting” of the Earth. Based on teaching sequences carried out in two different educational contexts in São Paulo city — a public high school and a community preparatory course — we discuss how different themes in biology education and diverse teaching strategies can contribute to a more contextualized and in-depth debate on the socio-environmental crisis we are experiencing, fostering new ways of perceiving and confronting it.
