COMPOSING CULTURAL STUDIES IN THE ANTHROPOCENE TOWARD A POST-ANTHROPOCENTRIC EDUCATION

Abstract
This essay reflects teaching experiences inspired by Cultural Studies, in dialogue with the field of Education, aiming to problematise Biology teaching in the context of the Anthropocene. We propose a mode of writing that challenges the nature – culture and human – non-human binaries, confronting anthropocentrism and regimes of invisibility. Situated within multispecies debates and the non-human turn, the text understands the latter as a critical and urgent political-intellectual practice. We examine how biological traditions —rooted in the natural sciences — continue to shape research and training practices, particularly those based on the killing of animals for knowledge production. We discuss the non-human turn in the Biological Sciences, focusing on ethics, teaching, and teacher education. The essay addresses biopolitical and necropolitical dimensions affecting both human and non-human animals, proposing an interspecies ethics against indifference. Cultural Studies are called upon to critically respond to contemporary urgencies from a post-anthropocentric perspective, engaging with non-speciesist educational practices and Critical Animal Studies to open new ethical and pedagogical horizons.
