Abstract

This experience report is the result of a discipline developed in a public school, in which students were able to get involved with the use of materials that triggered important developments. Thus, we report the experience in this discipline considering the role of materiality in the construction of understanding in the classroom. Several strategies were used during the classes, e.g., building mosquito traps to map their outbreaks. The construction of these mosquito traps demonstrated the role of materiality in the processes of building understanding, contributing to student participation in broader discussions, such as environmental racism. Recognizing the role of materiality in the classroom can reconfigure the relationships we establish with it.
